Maybe You Missed It

We got this information as a comment on a previous posting. A friend from Communications let us know that they are down from the required staffing level of 34 to a total of 22 dispatchers spread out over 4 shifts. So what is the problem here?Schedules; benefits; work environment; recruitment? If we remember right, you guys are 416 and recently got a new contract? Is there a problem there?
How does this affect the ability of communications to provide service to, not only the citizens of the county, but to those of us on the street. Those of us who depend on someone being at the other end of the line when we key up our radios.
Come on, you can share with us.....just between friends.

One problem that the communications has is I believe they are listed as clerical. I do know that the police telecommunicators make more money then them. Also quite a few are leaving to go to other departments in marion and surrounding counties because they are getting quite a pay raise and alot less work to go.

Heard a rumor today...

Some former IFD Communications people...full-time and part-time...who are sworn IFD firemen may get "detailed" back over there to assist in staffing the center while they are down so many people. Some of these people are company officers and a couple of battalion chiefs. Put your feelers out and see what you can find out.

As a former IFD comm center employee and now Merit FF, I can state that until the city recognizes that dispatching is not secretarial work, the door will continue to revolve. I remember when you had to stand in line and wait to get a chance to work for IFD in the comm center. Now it's gotten to the point that all you need is a pulse. That's a slap in the face to the FF's, EMS, and especially the taxpayers!!! It's time to shake the bushes and find out the true reasons for the mass exodus of employees and why the retention rate is so poor. Dig just a little, I think you'll easily find the reasons.
