Two In A Row

For the second day in a row, The Star goes after problems with IFD and again points its dirty little fingers at EMS.

http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080409/OPINION08/804090326/1291/OPINION08&GID=gsIbeWVy0naep3jFe561OusZ4qAQnjjaoxKq2pPJlHo%3D

For the second time, they have mentioned that the township EMS was suppose to be merged with Wishard, but they again fail to address why it didn't happen.
One thing is for certain, it can’t happen now. IFD EMS has representation, in the form of 416, and Wishard has AFSME, which claims representation rights for Wishard (yet has signed cards from only a few). The benefits are a world apart, the hours vary as greatly as the benefits, and the management structure speaks for itself. What is a Mayor to do. Jack up the prices and delay maintenance. Good call!
As an afterthought, why has The Star waited until this week to address a problem that has been festering for a full quarter? Don’t suppose it has anything to do with FDIC. Nothing like bad press for a fire department from it’s hometown newspaper when there are about 20-30 thousand firefighters in town. Are they going out of their way to embarrass our brothers and sisters over in suppression?

Stay Safe
Dee

First of all, please don't believe everything you read in the Star. There was some sort of plan in place to merge IFD and Wishard, but who really knows ANYTHING about that? A more important question should be how do you pay for it? It WILL come down to run volume when they start shutting down ambulances. Just look at the run loads in Warren, Washington, and Decatur. Wishard M71 is a prime example. (Decatur does have ALS units most of the time.) And 4 medics units in Warren come on. And then we have units that get driven into the ground on a daily basis. We need a third service. SEPERATE from Wishard and IFD. We need to think about a better way to distribute the run volumes. Maybe AVL is an answer. Keep safe!

What makes you think it can't happen now? Just because you have representation doesn't mean Jack! If the Mayor or the Fire Chief wants to dump the ambulance on Wishard's back they can do just that!

The only people who supports the ambulance service are the ambulance people themselves!

It is costing the city money, and taking man-power away from engines and ladders because no one wants to stay.

Local 416 could care less if the ambulance service is turned over to Wishard!

The Chief of EMS is walking on thin ice now also! Everyone has figured out he is out for himself! No one respects him!

Quite disrespecting the former Warren Township. They had a great service and system before IFD ruined it. If you want to be lazy and do fewer runs, THEN QUIT!! And I, for damn sure, don't ever want Wishard to cover my area. I am a firm believer in Fire Based EMS. However, IFD has no business running an ambulance because the administration has no idea on how to do it. IFD does have good EMT's and Paramedic's, just an office staff that does not have a clue.

Lets get things straight IFD does not have a fire based ems they have a civillian based ems system within the fire department

5:50 sounds a little bit like a firefighter from the city that is too afraid to step out from the anonymous tab and leave their comments on the fire side of this blog. IF I am not mistaken, and I could be since I am a dumb Civilian EMT with some fire background....the fire department can only bill for certain services they provide. So how is the fire side making the city money? And how can 60 people run up $800,000 in overtime in 4 months? I think the fire side is what is losing the city money and they are either too clueless to figure it out or so full of themselves they can't admit it.

Quit hiding behind the anonymous post and step up, center township fire MAN

i can see that you show a little favoritism in how you post the comments. why not keep it a little more "clean" and even with regard to firefighters coming over here and bashing on the ems? chet found a way to keep them from doing it on the other side and it seems to have cut down on the ignorant comments from "uneducated" firefighters.

try a level playing field, huh? keep the ineer city boys from being complete assholes, or is that the game?

We don't show any favoritism here. The only things deleted are posts which contain overt profanity; anything that might violate HIPPA; or direct personal attacks based on anothers sex, race, religon, or sexual orientation. While we don't condone the attacks on EMS from the firefighters, or on firefighters from EMS, at this time we feel that there is not enough reason to put a stop to the anonymous posts. We believe that given time, those that only post to start conflict will become bored and move on. On the other hand, those with valid information may feel more secure in posting if they are not required to identify themselves. We will watch and make adjustments as required. Thank you for your input and comments.

Yet IFD saw civilian overtime increase more than sixfold, to $839,000, after it took over ambulance services for Warren and Washington townships.

How can this happen when there are what? 60 of us? Somebody is doing some "Sheridan" math downtown.

Just out of curiosity, does the $800grand in OT include the scheduled OT that EMS gets? Or is this dollar amoutn in addition to that amount?

You may want to look at the communications division also. They are severely understaffed and are constantly in OT mode. Slated for 34 positions and only have 22 across the 4 "shifts"
